About Florida City Watch

We believe that cities having the freedom to operate with minimal state interference is critical to developing solutions that work for all Floridians where they live. Cities are formed and are governed locally by citizens determined to make better lives for themselves. It is vital to let these citizens have the freedom to govern themselves as they see fit.

We believe there should be respect for citizens' right to local self government, the authority of government at the city level, and the community stewards who are elected therein are imperative for a democracy to function.

Examples:

When faced with budget shortfalls in 2008, Florida lawmakers passed a budget REQUIRING local governments to increase taxes as a way to fix their $350 million shortfall.

State lawmakers are forcing tax and service cuts at the local level, yet they are considering tax increases at the state level saying that State services are too important to cut.

Every year, Florida lawmakers require local governments to spend an average of $25 million on new projects, yet state lawmakers don't pay for those things.

Our Role:

Our role is to shine a spotlight on Tallahassee and to highlight the danger of unfunded mandates and politicians' attempts to destroy our right to local control.
